Description

Modern Zen is a sophisticated and tasteful blend of modern and serene. Set in the redwoods of Cazadero near Austin Creek, this mid-century modern compound embraces stylish amenities like a hot tub, remodeled kitchen, outdoor shower and entertainment technology. Get away from it all in a two bedroom main house and separate private suite.

Outside is divine! The main deck sports a dining table for morning mimosas and alfresco meals, propane BBQ, large hammock (that gets a perfect amount of sunshine in the afternoon), plenty of welcoming seating and views up the hillside and into the redwood trees. It's the perfect gathering place between the main house and the private suite. Around the corner and completely private, a 6 person hot tub awaits. Just steps away is a private outdoor shower, hooks for towels and gate to the lower yard and fully fenced dog run.

In the main house the freshly remodeled kitchen has all new stainless steel appliances including dishwasher, a multi-tiered island and is open to the dining area and comfortable living room. The kitchen is well-appointed with quality cookware and colorful Fiestaware. This open floorplan is ideal for group cooking and congregating. No one is left out of the fun! Spread out in the living room to watch TV or stream music through the new flat screen Roku TV. Retreat to your cozy bedroom with a memory foam king bed and one with a queen bed. Each bedroom has a TV and sliding glass doors to the deck and hot tub. Get ready in the stylish main bathroom with heated floors, tiled shower/tub combo and marble counter top.

Cross the multi-level deck to the charming private suite with queen bed, separate comfortable seating area with TV and DVD player, full bathroom with heated floors and kitchenette with washer and dryer. This space is equally inviting when sun streams through the windows or rain patters on the roof. Make coffee in the kitchenette or grab a snack from the mini fridge before joining everyone in the main house for breakfast.

Native ferns, rhododendrons and thimbleberries thrive under the redwood trees with Japanese maples, climbing roses and camellias. Families, friends, dog owners and everyone else will love staying at this peaceful retreat in the woods - that's just a short drive to world class restaurants and wineries. Hiking in Armstrong Redwoods State Park or along the Sonoma Coast is minutes away.

Know Before You Book:

Maximum Occupancy and Quiet Hours: The maximum occupancy at Modern Zen is 6. Quiet hours are from 10:00 pm until 7:00 am. Outdoor amplified sound is prohibited at any time.

Parking: On-site parking is available for 3 vehicles. RVs, trailers and campers are prohibited, per the Sonoma County Vacation Rental Ordinance.

Bed Sizes: First Bedroom: King Bed, Second Bedroom: Queen Bed, Private Suite: Queen Bed.

Heat Source: The main house has central heat and wood burning fire place. The private suite has a gas fireplace.

A/C: The house does not have air conditioning. Being near the coast, the night time temps drop and just opening some windows is usually enough to cool the house.

Dog Run: A large dog run (approx. 1,500 square feet) with entrances through the deck off the hot tub and a gate at the bottom of the driveway has 4 foot tall fencing. The area is a combination of flat and hilly and may not be suitable for very small dogs.

Peaceful retreat that felt like the middle of nowhere but was 20 minutes from everything. Clean and modern but with a mature feel. Every updated appliance and top notch brand was available in the kitchen. Easy Internet. We loved it! My 10 year old granddaughter wrote out a thank you note on a papper towel and left it for you. The house is clean, spacious, and fully equipped. I did a lot of cooking and enjoyed it quite a bit. The hot tub is clean and as fun as you would expect, but the real outdoor treat is the shower. Its not just an outdoor shower, its a GOOD outdoor shower. Its HOT, private, and built into the deck right next to the hot tub with access through sliding doors to both rooms in the main house. The second "house" is really cool for having a separate space for kids or someone who just wants to get away from everyone for a bit. The courtyard deck area is really cool for eating or just hanging out in the forest. The internet is really good and the TV setup is great. There is even a wood-burning fireplace which I love. What makes it all even better is the area you are staying in. Safeway in Guerneville is fully stocked and only about 10 minutes way. In fact I kid you not I could spend an entire week exploring amazing beaches, forests, roads, and towns all within 20 minutes of the house. This place is fantastic. -via Vrbo

House was immaculate, well-appointed, and surrounded by beautiful redwoods on a very quiet street. We loved the setup with 2 houses and the deck in the middle. Our three teens loved having their own space. All the furniture was comfy, kitchen had everything needed, tons of windows and skylights so you could see the redwoods from any place inside. We greatly enjoyed our time at Modern Zen. We really felt away from it all on the deck under the redwoods. We cook a lot and found the kitchen well-stocked with everything we needed. Even a crock pot! The separate apartment was perfect for our college student so she could retreat when she had had enough family time. The only downside was that we had our senior dog with us and didn't realize there were steps into the house and steps down to the dog run. Highly recommend this space for a relaxing trip in nature. -via Vrbo

Loved our stay here - nestled in the redwoods away from the hoards of travelers in more populated areas. Close enough to do a full day wine tour in the Alexander or Sonoma Valley, a Russian River swim and super close to the beautiful Sonoma coast for hikes or trip to Bodega Bay. We loved coming back to relax in the hot tub or stare up at the stars on the hammock. Loved the place - it’s exactly as pictured and would stay again! -via Vrbo

The property was great. So quiet and peaceful, with beautiful surroundings. Great location for short trips to nearby places and also worth taking a longer drive to Avenue of the Giants. House was well furnished and equipped and full of information for local places to visit. Hosts provided great communication ahead of our stay with reminders while we were there. Loved our stay. Such a peaceful setting and great location for exploring the Sonoma Coast and a Russian River valley. We toured the Alexander wine valley and it was a 40 minute drive away. Loved the hot tub to relax and hammock to star gaze.

We had a lovely rainy weekend at this house. We agreed that this is the best-documented vacation home any of us had stayed at. It's very well set up for guests. We appreciated the separate suite, the heated bathroom floors, and the hot tub. It was too rainy to use the outdoor hammock, but we hope to return another time to enjoy it. We had a great stay at Modern Zen. The pics in the VRBO website are pretty much spot on. The beds were very comfortable as was the sofa and chairs in the living room. It was quiet - not much too much traffic on Austin Creek Rd during our stay. Views of redwoods and the forest all around. The kitchen has updated appliances and had pretty much everything we needed (glad I brought coffee filters. The heated floors in the bathroom were unexpected and welcome. The furnace is very efficient, especially on a cold rainy day. Convenient o Guerneville and Monte Rio. I will definitely reserve this home again as it was a nice relaxing environment - via Vrbo

Great house and location. It is super private and quiet, the Kitchen is incredible and I will miss relaxing in the hammock watching the sunset through the trees. Even though there isn't much walking distance, it is a only a 4 minute car ride to amazing coffee, pasties and shops in Duncans Mill or a great Friday Pizza night on Cazadero. Would recommend for those looking for peace and quiet either through the day or after a day full of activities.-via Airbnb

Great little spot to relax near Russian River, plenty of thoughtful little details in the home and was easy to find all the things we need. This home was clean, accurately represented by the pictures, and incredibly serine. It comfortably fit my party six + 2 dogs. We throughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely book again. The only note I will add is if you are a particular sleeper, I would bring my own pillow. The ones in the house were a bit too stiff for me.-via Airbnb

Home is lovely. We had problems with TV but found ourselves outside most of the time. Great proximity to several tiny towns. We took advantage of local farmer’s markets. Would recommend to adults looking for a calm and quiet get away.-via Vrbo

I loved this property... it definitely lives up to its Zen name. While we spent most of our free time in the hot tub we also took a walk over in Jenner, which was very close and took advantage of the indoor fireplace. There were only 2 of us so we didn't take advantage of the separate house but it would be great for multiple guests. The hot tub was big enough for several people as well. i would definitely rent this property again :) it was easy to get to but very quiet and did not feel too large for just 2 people.

Overall the house worked great for us and we were impressed with how well-appointed it was with everything we needed. very clean and organized with information on where to find everything. Great for the dogs. Dog run was different than expected not much room for play as it is on a hill, but we added fencing to cover hillside openings to the fenced deck yard and that worked well for our pups. We had a…mixed stay here. Bedrooms were all good, we enjoyed the hot tub/fire pit/grill, and the kitchen was very well appointed. The place was clean in terms of surfaces, bathrooms etc. However…there was one major con: the place was FULL of critters. Being in the woods, we of course expect there to be a standard amount of bugs, especially outside, but during our 3 night stay we encountered a tick, a slug, a huge wolf spider, and a scorpion inside the casita (scorpion and tick were there when we arrived, and we were very careful to never leave doors/windows open). We thought we were safe in the main house, until the last night…when a rather large rat scurried out from under the dishwasher. All in all we did enjoy our stay, but we were relieved to check out - you gotta get an exterminator in there STAT.-via Airbnb

Modern Zen was a great place to stay! The main house and suite had everything we needed, and it was convenient that the suite had a second (smaller) kitchen and bathroom. The patio space is beautiful and was a great place to have coffee in the morning and dinners in the evening. The house is a few minute drive from Duncans Mills, which has a general store (good for quick groceries), bakery/coffee shop, and other small shops. Jenner (coastal views/beaches) is about a 10 minute drive west, and downtown Guerneville is about 15 minutes east. We've typically stayed closer to the main strip of Guerneville, but we found Modern Zen to be a great mid-point location between Guerneville/Forestville wineries and Jenner/the coast. We'd certainly stay again! River Homes was also really easy to communicate with and super helpful!-via Airbnb

There were some challenges with the property, but first and foremost this place is amazing! I particularly loved the dog run and the outdoor shower. The guest house was quaint and very livable for its size. The rooms were spacious and the kitchen was modern and well stocked. However the oven was broken and it nearly ruined the first night of our stay. We recovered and made things work for the rest of our stay. I also nearly slipped in the shower (a $15 mat would have prevented that). There are also very poorly placed animal horns at the studio entrance that could easily cause injury. Also the living room table is unstable so watch out around kids. That’s it for the challenges. This place was fantastic and if you don’t mind spending a bit for an Airbnb you’ll love this place.-via Airbnb

These trees! Perfect, well appointed, very clean spot for east coast family members to reunion w/CA family. Grown kids stayed in main house - old folks in private suite. The dogs have thoroughly enjoyed the place as well. Such clear information about the house and the surrounding area. Beautiful drives and hikes and breweries during the day and always nice to get "home" for hot tub, games, food and drink, quiet and restful nights. Would love to return. Thanks.

The house was perfect for our family. The adult "kids" stayed in the main house and Mom and Dad enjoyed the separate guest house. The kitchen was very well equipped, we enjoyed cooking and using the grill. The location was perfect for going to the coast and wineries/towns. The hot tub was great, used every evening! The rental company supplied a mat for the front door as we had flood conditions the first few days and lots of wet feet. Would love to stay again if in the area.-via Vrbo

What a nice home and a beautiful location! The setting is so lovely in the Redwoods. Quiet and private. The hot tub was wonderful. Communication with the host was great. Plus a wonderful treat upon arrival! It’s a perfect location. The tiny town of Duncan Mills is 5 minutes away, a great place to stop and eat and enjoy the gift shops. Then not far is the beautiful Sonoma County coast and Bodega Bay. In the other direction only about 15 minutes away is Guerneville with beautiful Armstrong Woods State Park. What a jewel of a home nestled in the redwoods! The house was spotless and contains everything you need from the kitchen to the hot tub with sweet bonuses for dogs and outdoor lounging. The home instructions and email communication were crystal clear. With all the conveniences including a grill and hammock plus 3 nice bedrooms (including a Queen suite that's a separate unit), we could see coming back with our grown kids or other couples to cook and hang together. We all enjoyed the property and the layout. My husband and I stayed in the separate private space. My husband worked for much of the time, and this gave him the space that he needed to do that. My parents and our kids stayed in the main house. Both spaces were clean when we arrived. The location was great for us to pop over to the beach in the morning - beautiful. Gold Coast Coffee and Bakery is a short drive away for good coffee and pastries. The home had plenty of amenities and we could cook dinner. The heated floors in the main house bathroom were amazing. All in all, we had a great time and would gladly come back again.-via VRBO

We (two adult couples)stayed at Modern Zen for a week over the July 4 holiday and loved the property. Everything is as advertised or better. Mostly better. The area is totally peaceful, nestled in the redwoods, with little traffic nearby. The kitchen is fully equipped and included everything I could have imagined, from a Kitchen-aide stand mixer to a rapid bottle chiller. The one minor issue we had was quickly resolved to our full satisfaction. We would definitely stay here again if in the area.-via VRBO

Modern Zen is a beautiful quiet spot nestled in the redwoods. The house is well-designed for multiple people to fan out and do their own thing without getting in each other's way--our daughter and her boyfriend were working remotely and managed to have meetings inside and out--as well as offering wonderful areas to gather together to eat, or play games, or do a puzzle. The house is very dog friendly, with a basket of toys for the 4-footed. So many details were delightfully unexpected for a rental: the speaker for music, excellent wifi, a very well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds. We loved the hot tub and the expansive deck. We would definitely come back.

This was the perfect home for our family to meet at. Modern Zen is in an amazing setting, nestled in the redwoods. The furnishings were very comfortable and spotless. At this lovely home you will find impeccable cleanliness, and that means a lot coming from me! Additionally this home is in lovely condition, is very comfortable and well stocked. The smaller cottage was amazing for our senior family member while the next generation stayed in the main house. Absolutely perfect. We enjoyed the hot tub and were grateful for the wonderful dog yard, an enclosed area where they could have free play. With all of my Airbnb experience, this is a top pick for our family!!

had a great time staying at this location. We were able to visit several wineries in the Russian river area Sonoma and Napa. Very close to Armstrong Redwood park as well. The place was perfect for the four of us. Very clean and up to date. It was perfect after a busy day of touring the area., Very quiet and peaceful. The morning walks down the road was a perfect beginning for our days. I would easily recomend this place to anyone staying in the area.

This was a wonderful place to stay--clean, uncluttered, with supplies and amenities ready for us to use and enjoy, including a bottle of Champagne and OJ perfect for Mimosas! We loved the serenity of the place, set amidst old Redwoods, with an inviting outdoor deck and gathering space. We had our adult son and his wife as well as good friends over from Davis staying with us, and it was the perfect size and arrangement. The "cottage" with its own living space, kitchenette and bedroom/bathroom gave our guests their privacy. The outdoor shower, which some used, was a fun addition! With its location near Guerneville and the Russian River, as well as Armstrong Woods, there was plenty to see and do nearby. Jenner, at the spot where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean, as well as Healdsburg with its great shops, restaurants, and nearby wineries, were within a 1/2 hour drive from our place. This topped the list of our stays with VRBO and is a place we would love to visit again--soon!Source: VRBO

Had a great time at Modern Zen on a family getaway with my mom and sister. The house is tastefully decorated and the owners have done a lot to make their home comfortable for their guests. The guest suite is a detached tiny cottage and absolutely adorable. My mom stated there and loved having a place to rest and get some privacy. Beds were comfortable, sheets nice and soft. There are towels for the hot tub and outdoor shower. the outdoor area has a nice courtyard feel as it's bookended by the cottage and main house. The views of the redwoods are great. About a 15 minute drive to town. Overall all a great place and would love to stay again.Source: VRBO

Had a wonderful stay at Modern Zen! We had a packed itinerary of hiking and wineries, but wished we would have spent a day or two at the Home. It was relaxing, beautiful and w lol-equipped. There were five adults in our party and the separate suite was perfect for our daughter and son-in-law. Would definitely recommend this place! Only complaint was that the master bed pillows were too flat for our liking.

We had a fabulous stay at Modern Zen. Everything was immaculate and comfortable and exactly as advertised. We are a family of five with a dog and the house was accommodating for all of us, including our infant daughter. It stayed cool an shady during the heat of the day and the view of the stars at night was incredible. Our kids loved the hot tub and making s'mores in the fire pit and the gas grill was perfect for making family meals. The property is perfectly situated between the ocean at Jenner beach and the river in Guerneville. We toured Armstrong woods and ate copious amounts of ice cream in town. We will definitely be back!

We are a family of 5 adults and one 2 yr old, and we all enjoyed Modern Zen immensely! The location is secluded and beautiful but within easy driving to Guernville, the coast, and our favorite wineries! It's cooler than Guernville due to proximity to the coast; just lovely!The kitchen is very well equipped and there were numerous condiments available.TV sets have many more channels than I've ever seen in a rental; a real plus!Back deck really lends itself to relaxing and entertaining; the view is incredible!The separate cottage was terrific for my son, daughter in law, and grandson. I am tempted not to give it great reviews, so it can remain our hidden jewel. The 2 houses looked just like the pictures, even better. I felt like we were in a tree house with the surrounding forest. The house was immaculate and they even had Champagne and OJ ready for us to enjoy Mimosas. We used the hot tub every night, the firepit and BBQ. We had plans to go out to dinner a couple of nights but loved our place so much that we opted to stay in for dinner. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen stocked with everything needed for cooking. The coast, Guerneville, wineries and the Russian River are all close by, so you will not run out of things to do. We can't wait to book another trip to come back before our secret gets out. Thank you for a wonderful vacation!

We stayed for about a week at Modern Zen and we really enjoyed ourselves. The space is nice and open for relaxing and unwinding. We felt very comfortable the entire time. Whenever you can get away and still feel like you are home, that's when a place is really special. It was very nice to have laundry available. The property is very close to area towns and restaurants.

Lovely setting with a very open and inviting feel. The kitchen was outfitted with everything a person could wish for. Wish we had brought more groceries for breakfast. The patio, fire table and hot tub were wonderful for the group to visit around. The bed was very comfortable and now I want to buy the same kind. There were 6 of us staying here and it was the ideal place. The guest cabin is perfect for that couple to get some privacy, the kitchen was very well supplied with really nice appliances. I only wish we would have brought more groceries and breakfast food so we could have hung around longer in the morning. The outside area is a great place to visit with the hot tub and fire pit. The bed was so comfortable I am left searching for one just like it. I would love to come back here to stay and plan more time on the river.

Far better than expected. Most properties are lacking in some way relative to advertising. This place is way better. Everything is like new, more so than my house or even most nicer hotels. Heated floors in the bathroom, skylights everywhere, great big hot tub, quiet location, nice kitchen with everything in terms of cultery, cups, etc you'd have in a well stocked home.. highly recommend and will be back. Both units are nicely done.

Such a lovely property inside and out. The house is luxuriously yet comfortably furnished with all the modern amenities. There are cute humurous signs about to help you get your bearings. The home is open and bright. The outside space is a slice of heaven under the redwoods. Great for dinner al fresco with the family, a lazy afternoon reading on the deck, or copious amounts of quiet lounging time in the hot tub.

Our family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed our time at this delightful mini-compound. All the amenities and furnishings were very comfortable. The home is set up with more than enough kitchen items. We enjoyed the hot tub, visited Korbel and played Monopoly. Our older teens were thrilled to have their "own house" while we slept in the adjacent cottage. Quiet, spacious, clean... a real treat.

Everything about our stay at Modern Zen was amazing. The house was clean and came stocked with everything you needed (high quality cooking supplies, linens, comfy beds). The hot tub and grill allowed us to utilize the deck even though it was still a bit chilly this time of year. The only issue we came across was a broken dishwasher, but the nice folks at River Homes addressed the issue with great customer service. Recommend this property and River Homes to anyone looking for a nice getaway in the Russian River area.

We always stay at rentals rather than hotels, and this was the nicest we've experienced. The layout is great, with the smaller unit offering privacy if needed. The setting is lovely amid the redwoods, and minutes from Duncan Mills, Monte Rio, the river, and the ocean. And, nice beds and linens, lots of towels, including beach towels, a great dog crate and toys, and knives that are actually sharp! I can't rave about this property enough - to say that they had everything we would need and more would be an understatement. We booked the house for Thanksgiving with the slight fear that we may have to pack everything we'd need to make our holiday meal - boy were we wrong. The kitchen is so well equipped they even have a kitchenaid mixer WITH the ice cream attachment. Everything about this property is excellent from the way it's furnished as well as all the amazing amenities. I got home Sunday and longed for the Modern Zen kitchen as my own :-) Absolutely fabulous.
